It’s amazing what information you can find out about someone online. Every now and then I feel like Googling people I haven’t talked to in awhile to see what marks they’ve left in the online world; I always find a bunch of random crap. I guess you could call it online stalking, but I never do anything with the information nor do I obsess over it.I know I’ve used social network sites like Facebook, MySpace, DeviantArt, and such; if you search for me on Google, you’ll find different sites that I’ve been on at different times. I’m just glad I’m not a social networking whore. If I was someone completely devoted to pouring my personal life into these simple social sites, you could stalk me and learn a lot of information about me; someone could really fuck with my head then. Scary? Yes. I think so. Just think of the younger adolescents and children who use these sites!
In a completely perfect world, any good parent or guardian would tell their kids about the dark and scary underbelly of the social aspect of the Internet, but do you think the kids actually listen? Most likely not. Most young individuals usually have the thought “that can’t happen to me!” floating around in their minds. I’m surprised we don’t hear about serial killers and serial rapists using the Internet to stalk their victims more often.
